From assembly to AI: the abstraction ladder of software

Software keeps climbing the same ladder — and the newest rung is why your business can finally afford systems built around it.

The job software has always done

Every piece of software is a translation. Someone has a need in their head — "track my stock," "bill this customer," "tell me what I owe by Friday" — and that need has to become something a machine can run.

For most of computing history, the hard part wasn't the idea. It was the translation. Turning a clear business need into working software took rare skill, a lot of time, and a lot of money.

The interesting story of the last sixty years is not that machines got faster. It's that the translation got easier, one step at a time. Each step let more people build more things, faster and cheaper.

Think of it as a ladder. Software-making has been climbing it the whole time.

The bottom rung: talking to the machine

In the early days, people wrote in assembly — the machine's own language. It meant spelling out every tiny instruction: move this number here, add that one, store the result there.

Picture giving someone directions where you can't say "go to the market." You have to say "lift your left foot, move it forward twelve inches, set it down," for the entire journey. That is what writing for a machine used to be.

It was slow and expensive, and very few people could do it. A small program could take weeks. The machine got exactly what it understood, but humans had to think like the machine to get there.

The next rung: say what you want, not how

Then came compilers, and the work changed shape.

Instead of spelling out every machine step, you wrote your intent in a higher-level language — closer to how a person thinks. A separate program, the compiler, did the tedious translation down into the machine's own language for you.

This is the leap from "lift your left foot" to "go to the market." You describe the destination. Something else works out the steps.

That one change unlocked an enormous amount. More people could build software because they no longer had to think like the machine. They could think a little more like themselves and let the tools cover the gap. The altitude of the conversation rose — humans spoke at the level of what, and the machine handled how.

The rung we're on now: describe the system in plain words

The newest step raises the altitude again.

Now you can describe what you want in plain language — the way you'd explain your business to a new manager — and AI generates the working software underneath. The high-level code that a skilled developer once wrote by hand can now be produced from a clear description of the system you need.

You are no longer choosing a language and writing every line. You are explaining intent: how orders come in, what a good invoice looks like, who approves what, which number the owner checks every morning. The translation down to working software happens beneath you.

It's the same move as before — say what you want, let the tools handle the rest — just one floor higher.

What each rung actually changed

Notice the pattern across all three steps:

  • Assembly: humans think like the machine. Slow, costly, rare.
  • Compilers: humans say what, machines work out how. Faster, cheaper, more people.
  • AI: humans describe the whole system in plain language. Faster again, cheaper again, more people again.

No rung removed the craft. Each one raised the altitude at which a human expresses what they want. The work of understanding a business clearly — that never went away. What went away was the cost of turning that understanding into software.

And that cost mattered more than anything for a smaller business. A system shaped to how you actually work used to mean a long project and a price that put it out of reach. So most MSMEs settled for off-the-shelf tools that almost fit, and shaped their business around the software instead of the other way round.

The newest rung changes that math. When the translation gets cheaper and faster, a system built around your business stops being a luxury for large companies. A small manufacturer or distributor can now get one shaped around their actual process — in weeks, at a price that used to buy nothing.

The whole history of software is humans getting to express intent at a higher and higher altitude, while machines absorb more of the work below. Each rung made building more accessible. This one makes it accessible to you.
